UPDATE ON 2020 NOOKSACK TRIBAL COUNCIL ELECTION
April 21, 2020 Deming, Washington–
This press release is not the official Notice of Election but simply an update from the Election Board. Eligible Nooksack voters will be receiving the official Notice of Election in the mail with their ballot as required by the Election Ordinance.
As many of you know, the Nooksack Tribal Court has ordered that the 2020 Nooksack Tribal Council General Election be redone because of certain issues the Court found that placed the outcome in doubt. In addition, the Court ordered the Election Board to take the current COVID-19 pandemic into account in scheduling the new election. The Elections Ordinance, Title 62 of the Nooksack Tribal Code, authorizes the Election Board in the event of a re-election to determine the new schedule.
As a result of these concerns, on April 20, 2020, the Election Board met and determined to hold the 2020 General Election on June 27, 2020, beginning at 3 pm, subject to change in light of the pandemic. In accordance with the terms of the Ordinance and in compliance with the Nooksack Tribal Court Order, the election will conform to the previous election as much as possible — the candidates will remain the same and all voting will take place by US mail only, with the exception of replacement ballots requested within 10 days of the election date, which may be obtained in person. The form and content of the ballots will be the same.
Because of the current pandemic, the Election Board will only be holding office hours from June 15, 2020 until June 26, 2020 to cut down on any unnecessary exposure, however, you may call or email anytime previous to these office hours to request that a replacement ballots be sent. The Election Office will be open from 9 am until 5 pm on weekdays only and will remain open during the lunch hour. Social distancing rules will be observed unless the Nooksack Tribal Council rescinds its Public Emergency Declaration before that date.
All eligible Nooksack voters should receive the official Notice of Election and ballot in the mail shortly. In accordance with the terms of the Ordinance, ballots will be mailed out to the address on record with the Enrollment Department. If you have not updated your address with Enrollment, please do so immediately. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Election Board at email@example.com or (360) 592-7977.
