PUBLIC HEALTH MEMO COVID-19 September 10, 2020 Greetings Nooksack Community, As of Thursday, September 10, 2020, the Nooksack Indian Tribe has confirmed our first positive case of SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19, known as Coronavirus). Case #1 Non-Tribal member employee who resides outside of the tribal community Total tests collected by the Nooksack Health Clinic:  868 Total Positives:            1          Total Negatives:          837 Total Indeterminate:   0 Total Pending results:  30 Total Recovered:  N/A The Medical Clinic team is taking immediate steps to identify close contacts and instruct them to self-quarantine and is prepared to offer testing to those that are exposed and experiencing symptoms. Nooksack Tribe’s Notable COVID-19 Response Accomplishments Sept. 1- Sept. 7 Nooksack Tribal Council approves participation in COVID vaccine trial for willing Nooksack Tribal members, recommended by Health Officer Dr. Frank James. A temporary vaccine outreach coordinator and additional physician will be hired to help facilitate the program. More information to come regarding Nooksack participation.10% of Nooksack Northwood Casino employees begin testing with the Clinic. Testing will continue with 10% of employees each week to test all 104 employees.NPRT discusses current government hours of operation. Many families with children are juggling the start of virtual school, childcare, and work, during unusual COVID times.Nooksack to work with Washington State Department of Health on a localized COVID media campaign with Tribal members. Virtual Groups for Nooksack Youth

Behavioral Health

Participate in Nooksack’s weekly Virtual Groups three times a week with the After School Program. To register, call Behavior Health at 360-966-2376. Nooksack Tribal community members: Please register your child with the After School Program. Your child can participate in Virtual Groups hosted by the Nooksack Behavioral Health in collaboration with the After School Program on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 4 pm.   Contact Behavioral Health front desk to register your child with a phone number or email for attending Virtual Groups. Once we know you are registered, you will get reminder call or text massage from us before the group time. Please also call us for resolving any barriers, or problems you may face in getting online for Virtual Group participation for your children. We will do our best to help you. Food and Utilities Assistance Application

The Nooksack Indian Tribe CARES Act funding is available to all Tribal members 18 years and older. Please fill out the 2020 COVID-19 Food and Utilities Assistance Application online, or print and return to the Nooksack Administration Office. NOTE: If a member is going to turn 18 between 9/23/2020 and 12/30/2020, they will need to turn in an application by 9/23/2020. EXAMPLE: member turns 18 on November 22, 2020 – they will received a December check for $250. Applications are due September 23, 2020

Nooksack Tribe’s Notable COVID-19 Response Accomplishments Aug. 24 – Aug. 31st During the week of government-wide closure, all government buildings are deep cleaned and sanitized by a hired specialist company.UV air scrubbers are installed in all government buildings. This impressive project is provided by COVID-19 funding to insure safer working conditions for Nooksack employees.Dr. James is working on potential participation in vaccine trials for Nooksack.Chromebooks are distributed to Nooksack Tribal students. However, staff are facing an obstacle in shipping Chromebooks to our Canadian Tribal members due to the battery content of the package. Staff are actively working on a solution to get all Chromebooks shipped to students.Nooksack begins to offer the descendant Chromebook option for purchase at a discounted cost.Some applications are now available online for safe and convenient non-contact process.Whatcom Unified Command hosts a mobile testing site at the old Nooksack River building.10% of Casino employees will begin testing with the Clinic this week.The Pandemic Response Team acknowledges the need for conversations about the intersection of cultural events and COVID-19.Discussions continue regarding Nooksack education, Head Start, and youth programs.
