2024 Christmas Craft Fair is December 14th

The 2024 Christmas Craft Fair will be held December 14th from 10am to 4pm at the Mi’sq’eq’o Community Building. There will be free coffee, hot cocoa and pastries for attendees! $500 Holiday Distribution

From:Nooksack Tribal Council Press Inquiries: news@nooksack-nsn.gov 564-243-0537 October 17, 2024 NOOKSACK TRIBE EXTENDS AN OFFER FOR  TWO MORE MONTHS OF HOUSING, FOLLOWING FINAL COURT RULING Current Inhabitants May Stay Through December, Homes to be Reallocated to Tribal Members on the Waiting List for Tribal Homes Deming, WA – The Nooksack Tribe has extended an offer to the seven people who were served eviction notices in 2021. The offer is that they may remain in the home until December 31, 2024. This gives the current inhabitants another two months and 15 days to find housing. This is in addition to the three years that have passed since this process started. In return, Nooksack asks that these individuals agree to leave voluntarily, leave the homes in satisfactory condition with the exception of normal wear and tear, remove their personal belongings, and agree to become current with all debts by that date. The seven individuals have until October 31, 2024 to respond to the offer.  These are the seven Tribal homes that have been the focus of conversation for the past five years. Back to School Distribution August 7th and 8th

The Nooksack Tribal Council has approved Back to School Distribution in the amount of $500 per enrolled Nooksack child. Age 4 requires headstart enrollment verification. Ages 15 to 19 requires high school enrollment verification. Checks will be distributed Wednesday, August 7th from 11am to 6pm, and Thursday, August 8th from 11am to 3pm. Any checks not picked up by 3pm on 8/8/24 will be mailed to the address on file. Please ensure your information is updated with enrollment if you have had any address changes recently. Health impacts from wildfire smoke Wildfire smoke contains small particles and chemicals, which can cause minor to serious health effects. Minor symptoms include a burning sensation in your eyes, a sore throat, runny nose, headaches, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. In more serious cases, exposure to smoke can aggravate existing lung, heart, and circulatory conditions, aggravate asthma attacks, or cause chest tightness. Although smoke is unhealthy for everyone, some people are more susceptible than others: infants and children, people who are pregnant, older adults, and people with heart or lung diseases, diabetes, or respiratory illnesses (including COVID-19). SPRING PANTRY PROGRAM 2024: SIGN UP BY MARCH 13TH The Spring Pantry Program facilitated by the Foothills Food Bank will be offered to families during spring break. The Spring Pantry Program provides families with breakfast and lunch foods that children can prepare for themselves at home during the break. Families of students at all Mount Baker Schools may sign-up. How does it work? On Friday, March 29th, a box of nutritious breakfast and lunch foods will be delivered to participating families. Election Update from Terry Rainey: During post production review, it was discovered that during the digital imposition process when ballots are printed and inserted, the Treasurer’s race dropped from digital ballot image. This issue is being addressed as quickly as possible. All Absentee voters will be reissued a BallotPak with the corrected ballot using the highest available service level prepaid in both directions. The replacement BallotPaks will be out on Monday and there will be no additional expense to the Tribe or its voters. I regret any inconvenience this technology issue may have caused.

Strategic Energy Planning Workshop

To access current State and Federal funding for renewable energy projects, the tribe must develop a Strategic Energy Plan identifying and prioritizing projects. Given the interconnectedness of energy and costs in Tribal operations, it’s crucial for the plan to capture diverse perspectives. The Nooksack Tribal Council voted on 2023 Whatcom County Endorsements this week. Candidates endorsed are: Satpal Sidhu for Whatcom County Executive Kim Lund for City of Bellingham Mayor Donnell Tanksley for Whatcom County Sheriff Jon Scanlon for County Council At-Large Toni Jefferson for Ferndale School Board Position 3The process to vet endorsements included a lengthy questionnaire made available to candidates of the races included regarding important issues that protect tribal sovereignty, tribal treaty rights, local issues and more. We encourage everyone age 18+ to make sure you are registered to vote, and to make sure you VOTE in the 2023 elections. The General Election Day is November 7th.

Affordable Housing Project Announcement

The Nooksack Project will provide much-needed additional affordable housing units for the Nooksack Reservation. This new construction project will consist of 3 two-bedroom units and 1 four-bedroom unit. The three two-bedroom units will be contained in a triplex on its own lot located on First Street in Deming on the Nooksack Reservation. The four-bedroom unit will also be located on its own lot on First street on the Nooksack Reservation. The project will be on Tribal Trust land and there is a resolution from the Tribe to allocate the land for affordable housing to allow the Tribe to prevent, prepare for, and to respond to COVID-19 virus and similar threats by eliminating the spread of disease. Four new housing units with a total of 10 bedrooms will allow the Housing Department to prevent, prepare and respond to COVID-19 and other similar health emergencies by substantially reducing current overcrowded living conditions which exacerbate the spread of disease and create overall unhealthy living conditions. VA waives co-payments for eligible Native American/Alaska Native Veterans

WASHINGTON — Today, the Department of Veterans Affairs announced that eligible American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans are no longer required to make co-payments for health care and urgent care received through VA. The Biden-Harris administration and VA are proud to implement this rule, which is estimated to impact approximately 25,000 American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans. Under this new policy, VA will reimburse copayments paid on or after Jan. 5, 2022 and waive future copayments for eligible American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans.  Click here for further details
